Google Drive or an app for your wedding photos?

Couple kissing hidden behind the bridal bouquet

Current package prices are €14.99 (Basic), €34.99 (Premium), and €49.99 (Exclusive). The anchor prices that applied on 10 September 2026 were €14.99, €34.99, and €49.99 respectively.

The idea is sensible and free: create a folder in Google Drive, generate a QR code pointing at it, print it and put it on the tables. Guests scan, upload, done.

In practice that chain breaks in one place, and always the same one.

What the DIY setup looks like

Setting it up takes about fifteen minutes. Create the folder, turn on sharing, paste the link into a free QR code generator, print the code.

It costs nothing, and it feels like you solved the problem just as well as a paid app would. That feeling lasts until the wedding day.

Where it breaks down

  • The upload happens later, not in the moment. Nobody in the middle of a reception opens a browser and waits for two hundred megabytes to upload — they tell themselves they will do it tomorrow.
  • Nothing reminds anyone. A Drive folder cannot send a notification. If a guest forgets, the photos stay with them forever.
  • It requires a Google account. Uploading into someone else folder means signing in. A share of older guests simply gives up there.
  • Storage is limited. The free 15 GB is shared across Gmail, Drive and Google Photos, and a few hundred full resolution photos take a good bite out of it.
  • A folder is not a gallery. You get a file list with names like IMG_4821, in no order and with no proper view.

The real difference: uploading versus capturing

This is the heart of it, and worth understanding before you compare prices.

The DIY setup asks a guest to complete a task after the wedding — to dig the reception photos out of a camera roll of a thousand and upload them. That is work, and work gets postponed.

Wedding Camera asks for no upload at all. A guest scans the code, enters the PIN and shoots inside the app. The photo is in your gallery the second it is taken, because it never sat only on their phone.

Reminders a folder cannot send

On the wedding day the app sends six notifications by itself to every guest who installed it:

  • At the start of the reception, when everyone has just arrived.
  • During dinner.
  • When the party starts and the dance floor is busiest.
  • In the late night hours.
  • In the early morning, towards the end of the celebration.
  • The day after, as a nudge to add whatever did not make it.

Six reminders at the right moment do what no flyer on a table can — they bring the gallery back to mind exactly while something is happening.

When Google Drive is genuinely enough

There is no reason to sell you something you do not need.

With around forty guests who are mostly younger and comfortable with technology, and a budget stretched to the last euro, your own folder and a QR code will do the job. The same holds if a photographer already covers the whole day and guest photos are only a bonus.

The more guests you have, and the older the crowd, the more you gain from a setup that does not depend on anyone remembering.

The comparison in short

  • Cost: your own folder is free, Wedding Camera packages start at 14.99 euros.
  • Timing: Drive needs an upload later, the app captures the photo immediately.
  • Reminders: a folder has none, the app sends six across the day and the day after.
  • Access: Drive needs a Google account, the app needs only a QR code and a PIN.
  • Materials: with DIY you design the flyer yourself, the packages include a print-ready design.
  • Result: a folder is a file list, the gallery is a proper view with one click download.

Frequently asked questions

Can guests add photos to a Google Drive folder without an account?

No. Uploading into someone else folder requires signing in. Without an account a guest can at most view the folder, if it is shared that way.

Do photos lose quality in the Wedding Camera gallery?

No. They transfer at full quality, the same as on Drive. Unlike chat apps, there is no compression here.

How many reminders do guests get?

Six, spread across the wedding day and the day after. The wording follows the language of the wedding.

Is it worth combining both?

Rarely. Two destinations for the same photos usually means half the guests use one and half the other, so the pictures end up split again.

If it matters to you that the photos actually reach you rather than depend on someone else remembering, take a look at what the packages include.
